Happy Friday! WB has released the Complete Script of HBP, and it's quite fascinating because we can read the directions given to the actors as well as seeing lines that were left out of the movie:

What Was WB Thinking? ~ New Snape Footage

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 6:11 PM
Snape-STFU

I wish WB would 'splain why they left out one of the most dramatic shots of Alan Rickman ever filmed for one of these movies? It's unbelievable. Are they just made of teh stoopid or what? That's a hypothetical question - I know the answer very well.

Nostalgia Friday ~ Canon Snape Fan Art

  • Oct. 30th, 2009 at 12:27 AM
Snape-Read

I get nostalgic for Canon Snape sometimes, considering the ways people spin his character on the forums or feel the need to spread the Snape-Hate around. Luckily many artists understand book-Snape perfectly because they aren't in denial about what actually happens in Deathly Hallows.

Edited to Add: I intended this post to be some quick escapist fan art, and didn't realize I was expressing myself so badly.

After reading many of your comments, I realize that my view of Canon Snape may be somewhat different from the norm.  I was actually referring to people who hate Snape's character in general and are stuck in the past around PoA when his character still seemed like a cardboard villain. I talk to people like that every day on the forums.  They want to dwell on the dark side of his character rather than the redeemed man he became by the end of the series (with apologies to Mary J ~ we'll have to agree to disagree on that fact).

I don't know why fans of "Dark Snape" have a monopoly on the term "Canon Snape." I disagree with their view of Snape in the canon because I don't think of "Canon Snape" as just mean and cunning, and I shouldn't have used such a charged phrase. To me that is what Snape haters say when they accuse Snape fans of glossing over his faults - that we are missing Canon Snape and only seeing a romantic hero.

BUT ~ Read more... )

These are some pictures from DeviantArt that have touched me lately. Follow the links to see more from each artist. And of course, all these are much better seen at full size, so check that out also. The first one especially may be one of the best fan art pics ever done. Cheers to Vizen for her brilliant use of color, the blurry plaid on McGonagall's clothing, thhe sense of humor, Dumbledore's cocktail glass with a tiny umbrella, and Snape's spectacular nose.

The Snape-Haters say they see him that way, but in reality they want to believe Harry's view of his least-favorite teacher. There's a guy I know who continually says that Snape "whipped" Harry with a lash and pushed him to the ground at the end of HBP just for the enjoyment of it. I don't see that at all - but it's the allegedly the same canon.

So to me, Canon Snape is the guy in the books with his many faults and his good points. In my opinion, he is a sympathetic character by the end of the series, and not just a baddie or a mean old schoolteacher. He's a well-rounded character, and a very complex character, which is why we are still talking about him years later.

Steve Killick, a Harry Potter fan, said:
"It is very exciting to think that there are fans of Harry from other galaxies.
Most of the world has fallen in love with Harry Potter
so it makes sense that most of the universe will do eventually too."

Most of you have seen the gorgeous new high-resolution pics of Alan Rickman, but here they are in one place if you want to gaze lovingly at them again.

Travis Prinzi muses about Snape and leads a discussion that runs the gamut of everything people usually say about Snape/Lily, from the obsessive to the romantic. Quite a hodgepodge!

And John Granger over on Hogwart's Professor has an interesting post about Regulus Black and the problem of how on earth he found out about horcruxes? A valid question, indeed:

And finally, scientists have announced a botanical discovery in the Phillipines, and this looks like something Snape should keep around the house when Peter is visiting.

Hey all ~ So sorry to be here two hours late. We got home just after three A.M. and I was ready to get online and chat, but our cable connection wasn’t working because Comcast was doing maintenance just in the area of my small town, tonight of all nights! So I tried to make good use of the time and spent about an hour typing up my first impressions.

What can I say about the movie? I was blown away by it.

We had four tickets and my oldest son wasn’t originally planning to go with us. So I thought my husband was going and then I could tell you his perspective as someone not that familiar with the books. That will have to wait for another time because my son changed his mind, and my husband ended up staying home. We should have bought five tickets to begin with, but then we would have had to take two cars, so anyway ~ I went with my three kids.

We went to a huge movieplex called The Rave and you can see how big it is. We had to park a quarter of a mile away because the parking lot was spilling over. They had five large theaters showing the movie and the lobby was completely packed with people. My daughter and younger son went in to get seats, and my older son and I stood in line for about 20 minutes to get popcorn and cokes. After a few minutes my daughter texted us that the only seats left were way down front but by then I was just happy to have seats at all. For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, I would not recommend sitting so close because some of the action shots made me dizzy. However, it was great being up so close to Dumbledore and Snape!

We didn’t dress up in costumes, which is just as well because sadly there weren’t that many people there in costumes. However, there were enough to make it interesting. I saw one boy who had on a Gryffindor-colored bathrobe, but he was wearing a batman mask, so he looked like a strange Death Eater. Then I saw quite a few Slytherin types in black robes with green neckties or socks. Lots of kids were wearing pajamas. Since my son didn’t want me to dress up, my alternate plan was just to wear all black and white. I had a black and white shirt black pants, and my daughter wore all black.

Usually my kids are very critical of the movies, so I expected a lot of nitpicking in the car on the way home. But it didn’t happen! All three of them said it was the best movie of the series. My daughter just read HBP again and she said it was the first time that the movie left her as satisfied as the book, which is high praise indeed.

And here are my thoughts mingled with some of their perceptions:

Countdown to Half-Blood Prince

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 8:24 PM
NaNoWriMo
~~ I wrote this post once today, so you are not seeing double. The code went berserk and the margins went crazy on me just because I edited one little punctuation mark. Then my husband and I went out to dinner for his birthday, which is tomorrow, and I just got back to work on this.  I hope this post works!

I'll leave this thread up between now and Tuesday, and then do a chat thread on Tuesday night for the midnight showings. That way if anyone wants to drop in at 3 a.m. to discuss the movie we'll have a spoiler thread for that.

I have made a ton of new icons, but I'm not putting them up until Monday or Tuesday. However, if you see any new ones here they are free for the taking - just credit  [info]nettlebrew

[info]lemon_ashwinder and I along with others on HPN are passing the time playing the Five-Word Game, and things have taken a turn for the controversial. Are Harry's eyes really black? Did his mother really buy him a tiny black frockcoat when he was a baby? Did James not pass the DNA test? If you can be snarky in five words while hopefully ticking off certain people about Harry's gene pool, please join us.

There are a few interviews and new videos worth posting after all, but with spoilers of course.

A long interview from The Scotsman with Helen McCrory who plays Narcissa from Snitchseeker:

"Don't reach down for your popcorn, because by the time you do, I could be off the screen, in Half-Blood Prince I am literally like, whoa, there she goes! But everyone was like that. In our first scene, Helena Bonham Carter and I are rolling past this blue screen, and we knock on the door and Tim Spall comes out.

This Proves That I'm Just Like Snape

  • Jul. 2nd, 2009 at 10:26 AM
NaNoWriMo

These new pictures of Spinner's End are amazing. But one of them that came out yesterday really shocked me. I already knew that Spinner's End was going to be full of books, and I knew I would love it. But as soon as I saw the picture I went and got my camera and took a picture of my own living room. The chair is even angled the same way!

Honestly, I could photoshop Snape out of his chair and put him in my chair and he would look right at home, which sounds good to me. My books are a little more colorful, but at least Snape doesn't have the same hideous 1975 wood panelling. Did I mention my house is also a Muggle dung heap? But trust me, I have way more junk than Snape does.

Spock-Tribble

I'm drifting and getting distracted now that it's summer and the kids are out of school, so I haven't posted anything new in a week or so.

My husband and I went to see Star Trek last weekend, and I loved it! What they've done with the new movie is really clever. Like many fan-fiction writers in HP and elsewhere, they threw out some of the existing canon and plotted a new course where no Star Trek movie has gone before.

At first I was scratching my head over it, wondering why they would give Kirk and Spock new backstories and throw in time-travel (which I usually hate). But then I realized that they are no longer tied down to events in the original series, the other series, the various movies, and the many novels, even those written with the consent of Paramount. This is "alternate universe" Star Trek and new things can happen - I like that!

How Would Harry Potter Judge Susan Boyle?

  • Apr. 18th, 2009 at 1:15 AM
NaNoWriMo

I love a story about underdogs - Rocky, Rudy, the Jamaican Bobsled Team - anything! And of course my favorite character in Harry Potter is one of the most misjudged and maligned characters in the history of literature based on his personal appearance.

This week,[info]lemon_ashwinder told me to watch the totally flippin' amazing video of Susan Boyle trying out for Britain's Got Talent, and every time I watch it, I cry a little. The condescending attitude of the audience and judges, plus the poignant lyrics of the song about someone who has lived in hell and lost their dream - all that just gets me. And if you don't know much about music, listen to her idol - the attractive Elaine Paige - who isn't half as good with that song!

Susan Boyle watched Elaine Paige rise to success while she stayed home in a village and took care of her mother, and almost nobody cared until this week. And she has made statements discussing the way people have treated her for her appearance, like these from the Daily Mail:

...(she was )teased by the local children on the rare occasions she ventured out of her pebbledash-fronted terrace house. They called her Susie Bong, or Susie Simple.

...'The ones who were mean to me are now nice to me,' Susan revealed during her interview with CBS, a reference, surely, to those people who have teased and tormented her over the years.

So I've been asking myself: "What would Harry think of Susan Boyle?" Because no one judges a book by its cover the way Harry does!

If you have not yet voted in the Chamber of Secrets Minister Election,
the Final Vote Poll is up now!

So far the Snape/Molly team is in the lead with 49 votes so thanks to all those who have voted! The vote is open until November 7th.

At first I wasn't going to get so involved with this, but it has just been a joy to work together and meet alot of new Snape fans. We are all going to be sad when it's over!

Also, Sev and Molly are throwing a Halloween Party that will be ongoing until October 31st. No campaigning, just fun, chat, and relaxation. Please drop by, and Snape or Lucius might even dance with you if you can get Narcissa out of the way, haha.

We earned that thread by winning best charity idea in the last vote for A Jumper for Every Child. See our complete campaign thread Here.

I've been busy with all this so I just noticed that there is a new trailer out for Half-Blood Prince, and it's really interesting!  I could do without Harry getting hit on the head once more, though - thankfully this time by Hermione instead of Snape!
