I get nostalgic for Canon Snape sometimes, considering the ways people spin his character on the forums or feel the need to spread the Snape-Hate around. Luckily many artists understand book-Snape perfectly because they aren't in denial about what actually happens in Deathly Hallows.
Edited to Add: I intended this post to be some quick escapist fan art, and didn't realize I was expressing myself so badly.
After reading many of your comments, I realize that my view of Canon Snape may be somewhat different from the norm. I was actually referring to people who hate Snape's character in general and are stuck in the past around PoA when his character still seemed like a cardboard villain. I talk to people like that every day on the forums. They want to dwell on the dark side of his character rather than the redeemed man he became by the end of the series (with apologies to Mary J ~ we'll have to agree to disagree on that fact).
I don't know why fans of "Dark Snape" have a monopoly on the term "Canon Snape." I disagree with their view of Snape in the canon because I don't think of "Canon Snape" as just mean and cunning, and I shouldn't have used such a charged phrase. To me that is what Snape haters say when they accuse Snape fans of glossing over his faults - that we are missing Canon Snape and only seeing a romantic hero.
BUT ~ ( Read more... )
These are some pictures from DeviantArt that have touched me lately. Follow the links to see more from each artist. And of course, all these are much better seen at full size, so check that out also. The first one especially may be one of the best fan art pics ever done. Cheers to Vizen for her brilliant use of color, the blurry plaid on McGonagall's clothing, thhe sense of humor, Dumbledore's cocktail glass with a tiny umbrella, and Snape's spectacular nose.

The Snape-Haters say they see him that way, but in reality they want to believe Harry's view of his least-favorite teacher. There's a guy I know who continually says that Snape "whipped" Harry with a lash and pushed him to the ground at the end of HBP just for the enjoyment of it. I don't see that at all - but it's the allegedly the same canon.
So to me, Canon Snape is the guy in the books with his many faults and his good points. In my opinion, he is a sympathetic character by the end of the series, and not just a baddie or a mean old schoolteacher. He's a well-rounded character, and a very complex character, which is why we are still talking about him years later.

Transcript:
Q: Is it true that you've got a part in the next Harry Potter movie?
JCBowers: Yeah, Yeah - Deathly Hallows.
Q: What is your character?
JCBowers: I'm playing a character called Gellert Grindelwald, and um, he's sort of a young friend of Dumbledore's from way back when. And of course J. K. Rowling "outed" Dumbledore years ago so there's meant to be or possibly a thing between them. We don't know, and obviously it's not in the movie, but it's maybe there in the subtext. Who knows?
Q: You're doing, you're kind of into your ...
JCBowers: Dark
Q: No, with Potter and Twilight and - your sequels.
JCBowers: Yeah, I'm into my sequals. *laughs* Yeah, I'm into my franchises, one could say. I joked with someone last week that I"m a franchise whore and I truly believe that.

Snitchseeker has a Complete List of Half-Blood Prince DVD Release Dates, plus the news that footage from Deathly Hallows will be included on the discs. No word on what the footage will be yet, so stay tuned.
Also, Snitchseeker has a new Facebook Page if you want to become a fan and get Harry Potter News sent to your profile page.
Serbian Actor Rade Serbedzija will be playing Gregorovitch the Wandmaker in Deathly Hallows according to This Report.
Empire Magazine has added several of our favorite Potter stars to its list of 100 Sexiest Movie Stars. These include Dan Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Robert Pattinson, and Helena Bonham Carter. But of course, there are two other guys on the list that I could easily vote for, so it will be difficult to choose (but I disagree that Snape is a bad boy - geesh, will someone give these people a clue?):
8. Alan Rickman
It's good to see that here, amid the chiselled cheekbones and perfectly coiffed heads, is a man who's sexy because he's smart, snarky and has a fine line in put-downs. Sure, everyone loves a bad(ish) boy, but Rickman's rogues' gallery is united by the fact that they're all strangely, unjustifiably sexy. Yes, even greasy-haired Snape. And as for his good guys, they're pretty irresistible.
Most alluring as... For Rickman as a good guy, as deceased cellist Jamie in Truly, Madly, Deeply (if you haven't seen it, it's like Ghost but better). For Rickman as a baddie, it's gotta be Hans Gruber in Die Hard.
Interests include... He's heavily involved in supporting theatre and lots of theatre causes, and holds a vice-chairmanship of RADA.
24. Jason Isaacs
Last time we ran a Sexiest poll, repeat voting by a hard core of Isaacs fans threatened to derail the whole thing. This time, he's in a slightly more sensible position, reflecting both the fact that he's not a hugely well-known leading man and the fact that he's devastatingly charming and handsome. Seriously, show us someone who doesn't fancy him, and we'll show you a corpse.
Most alluring as... Is it wrong that we fancied him as both Lucius Malfoy and Captain Hook in Peter Pan (2003)? It is? OK then, er, David in Friends With Money.
Interests include... Amusing all the Empire staff with scandalous anecdotes every Empire Awards night. Also, raising two children and speaking Spanish.
Warwick Davis, who plays both Prof. Flitwick and the Goblin Griphook in the movies, has been answering questions in the past week via Twitter.
"Could you possibly give us an insight as to why Flitwick's look was changed for the third HP movie?"Interview with a Death Eater
So many of you have asked me the 'New look Flitwick' question, so I will answer it here, once and for all. When it came time to shoot 'Azkaban', there was no mention of 'Flitwick'' in the script. However, the producer still wanted me to be in the movie, so he asked if I would play the role of 'Choir Master'. Of course, I said 'yes'. When it came time to shoot 'Goblet of Fire', the director, Michael Newell said he liked the look of the choir master, and from that moment, the character became known as 'Flitwick'.

Without doubt, Snape.
James Williamson will play the role of a Death Eater in the final part of the JK Rowling series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The 25-year-old, from Peartree Farm in Wood End, landed the role after going for an audition at Leavesden Studios in Watford.

The Improper.com: Who Should Play Prince Harry in "The Spare" (no joke - real title as in "heir and a spare" William & Harry)
Helen McCrory, our Narcissa Malfoy, says quite a lot about the Deathly Hallows Movies without actually saying anything at all, probably due to her cast-iron secrecy clause with WB. Good work, Helen - you won't get sued, and you sound so pleasant all the same!

Here's a nice interview from Harry Potter's Page with Harry Melling, who plays Harry's bad-boy cousin Dudley Dursley. Dudders may have to wear padding in the Deathly Hallows movies since Melling has suddenly lost his baby fat. And I don't think he had to use Petunia's wilted lettuce diet either.

And also JKR: According to the London Telegraph: J. K. Rowling dressed in black and purple was seen at Stella McCartney's show during Paris Fashion Week, and she made a statement about what she's writing these days. People who were excited by her Twitter last week that she was busy with pen and paper may be disappointed.
JK Rowling bid for three tickets to see Stella McCartney’s Paris show at a Gala Auction in London, in June, to raise funds for the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation, and bought along two friends. “I’m working on something, but it’s not Harry Potter,” she said. “I need a Harry break.” A Stella McCartney fan, she said she loved the designer’s clothes because “they’re so wearable.”

... Lewis: “I've done a few days which went fantastically,” he said. "You wouldn't be able to tell it was the last in the series because the atmosphere is electric –everybody is having such a great time.”

I play Gellert Grindelwald, who is an old friend of Dumbledore's," explained the 21-year-old actor. "It's a flashback character, which is good fun. I did a little bit before I went off and did 'New Moon.'"
"No, I'm just doing number one," he answered when we asked if Grindelwald was scheduled to be in both halves of the split-for-the-cinema-sequels made from J.K. The question is, was it worth it for them to die for Harry, who couldn't really die himself?
I keep tripping over this point because I've been debating someone about the fact that Harry was so ultra-protected in many ways while everyone else was not. Harry had the cloak, the magical blood, the Resurrection Stone, and knowledge of the horcruxes, and most importantly the loyalty of the Elder Wand. My debate partner on a forum has been saying that Harry was still just as brave as anyone else because he "didn't know" whether he would die or not when he took his walk in the forest. I don't see that as all that brave since no one else knew whether they would survive the Battle of Hogwarts either, and they had alot less knowledge of what was going on than Harry. He at least had reassurance from Dumbledore that he probably would survive.
Personally, I think JKR tugged on our collective heartstrings just a little too long, and hinted around at killing Harry for too many years. Then to show that she wasn't a wuss at the death game, she slaughtered a bunch of characters unnecessarily to make it seem more like a real war. After all, Harry was never even going to shed a drop of blood in his final duel, and thus, Snape's death had to be extremely gory.
Just my opinion, but I'm glad my tears were shed earlier for the truly brave - Dobby and Snape. I didn't shed one tear for Harry. I knew he wouldn't die, with that theme park coming and three more movies. Snape is never going to have a theme park, and thank God in heaven for that.

By now most of you have heard that J.K. Rowling sat by Michelle Obama last night at a Dinner for the G-20 Summit. I hope we at least get a picture of that.
Then there is this intriguing post from who seems to have gotten a little preview of what's in store for the Lexicon's British Book Tour and Beyond. We'll have to check with Steve Vander Ark on that one!
Movie News:
According to Cinemablend there is supposedly a new trailer for HBP that was shown yesterday that shows a great deal more than we have seen so far. If it is released online, I'll post it here of course.
Then in Total Film Magazine, Tom Felton had this to say about the Sectumsempra scene:
"It was great. We spent a week in this misty bathroom set, rolling around in the water having all sorts of fights. Its a longer sequence than it is than in the book." The article continues: "There is blood-but also some fleshing out. This film develops the character further than before," he says. "We take the chance to explain why he's such a complete cretin, that he's not just doing it for the sake of doing it."Rhys Ifans Talks about playing Mr. Lovegood in Deathly Hallows as a "really great guy." That's in the eye of the beholder - some would call Mr. Lovegood a traitor.
Leaky Cauldron reports that David Yates has chosen cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel to use a hand-held camera look on Deathly Hallows. We can only speculate on what that might be like. Hwyla wrote on HPN that it could turn out looking like "Blair Witch Harry" and we don't want that!
And finally, today is the day that Harry Potter Network unveils our new Fan Fiction Forum, moderated by our dear Olwen with me riding posse as her sidekick deputy. I know all you writers are really going to enjoy this, especially our new Contest! See a preview under the Cut...

This post is really 180 degrees from my last post, which was pretty negative. Thankfully there are other things in the world to talk about besides the bad economy!
I often get inspired by John Granger's group on Hogwarts Professor, and this time I found an interesting post about the words "All Was Well," which is the last line of the last book, Deathly Hallows. So the first quote is what JKR said about the line, the next four quotes here are Granger's ideas for the inspiration for that line, and the last quotes are lines that I thought of when I read DH.
We can't really know what the true inspiration for that line was - maybe all of these!

If you haven't heard alot of Wizard Wrock band lyrics, this is a good introduction. I admit to knowing almost nothing about the phenomenon.
Couple of highlights about copyright - this guy Brad Neely who only knows the story from the movies and wrote his own words to fit with it. I detest his voice - ack! - but the idea is pretty funny. Read more about him HERE. His views on WB are so hilarious - he talks about some guy smoking a cigarette who calls the other "sleeper cells" to warn them when someone is breaking copyright. *LOL* We have our own X-File Cigarette Smoking Man, apparently! I hate to tell him, but WB has no sense of humor about this, so we are laughing as we pass the fan graveyard.
About a third of the way through is the story of a girl who stood up to WB when their attorneys tried to pull her Harry Potter website off-line. She orchestrated a world-wide boycott of the movies and dvds called "Potterwar." Can't say that I remember participating, but it's pretty interesting. Considering what happened to the Lexicon, I don't think she really changed WB's view on copyright.

More HP News:
There was a hubbub over the weekend about a British Tabloid saying there had been another preview of HBP and people hated it. Turns out, it was just a rehash of last fall's fatal preview when they showed HBP and people hated it. So no worries, right? Notice they didn't deny that the comments were uniformly negative. WB only debunked the idea that they would be stupid enough to repeat the negative commenting process. *LOL* Smart move, WB!
OK - who can explain this? A new picture has emerged on AcesShowbiz and originally on Scar Potter of two girls called "The Carrow Twins" - Flora and Hestia - and it's supposed to be from the Slug Club scene in HBP. One theory I've seen around is that this is really Crabbe and Goyle in disguise, but why name them after the Carrows, who were brother and sister? Implied incest?

This is about an interview posted on the HAH website in which JKR says that the working title for Deathly Hallows for years was "The Hallows of Hogwarts" or "Hogwarts Hallows." She says in the interview that her lawyers had created a company called "Seabottom" that posted several bogus titles online (see list at the link) just to keep people guessing, but one of them was close to the actual name of Book Seven.
JKR: Yeah, I sent them a list of plausible titles, including the real one. Hallows of Hogwarts for years was going to be the title of the seventh, and it was wrong, just wrong.
MA: They aren't all of Hogwarts.
JKR: Exactly. It changed completely, so Deathly Hallows was definitely the right way to go. I like the title of Deathly Hallows.
This intrigues me because I sometimes disagree with my friend

People who are still traumatized over the sudden demise of Hedwig Owl in Deathly Hallows should probably not read the following quotation from JKR. It refers to the scene when Harry is walking to his near-death experience in "The Forest Again."
Source Here.
"I had to work quite hard in finding a very particular way for that snitch to be caught because I knew I was going to do that later; initially, as my British editor can confirm, I had Hedwig catch that snitch. She wanted that changed, and I thought, 'Oh, God, back to the drawing board.'Revised: I had something written something earlier today about JKR changing her mind about the death of Hedwig, which she did, but I didn't quite understand the situation. Having read the Harry:A History (HAH) website again, I realize what the deal is:
Actually that's what sealed Hedwig's fate, because the plan was for Hedwig to open the snitch, because (she) touched it first, but, by making it Harry, then it was time too kill her earlier. I think she was going to die anyway, eventually."
In Book One, Harry catches the Snitch in his first Quidditch Match. JKR told Melissa Anelli that in the original version, Hedwig caught the Snitch, but the Editor at Bloomsbury didn't like it, so Harry had to catch it. And that is the same Snitch he "opens at the close" of Deathly Hallows.
Number one: why would she want Hedwig to catch the Snitch during Quidditch? How would they score that?
Number two: I still don't see why Hedwig had to die. She could have been put in a cage, after all, or kept at the Weasleys. *eyeroll*

Well, something like that - but what reminded me of the story was that Warner Brothers has decided to chop the Deathly Hallows story in half, resulting in two movies instead of one. That way, they can squeeze another moolah-making movie out of the franchise. That way the number of movies equals the number of horcruxes, including Harry's head scar - eight instead of seven.
And finally, that way they can ensure that fans everywhere will thank them on bended knee for all the time Harry will waste wandering around in the forest with his tent-mates in Movie seven, and all the big-bad battle scenes in Movie Eight. Yes, aren't we all just so excited about that?
So where will they cut it? Down the Middle? Where exactly "is" the middle? Give me your wisdom!
