Mid-Week Links ~ Feathers and Fangs

Rattler

A great horned owl flew right in front of our car on Sunday night as we were driving through a wooded area. It was big and we missed it by scarcely a feather! It must have been swooping on a mouse or rabbit in the opposite lane, which was living dangerously. I even checked the front grill and light of the car when we got home to see if there was anything left behind, but there wasn't anything.

But it could have been a problem if our worlds had collided:

Then there are the reptiles still on the move, even during the colder weather. Watch Out! This is why I don't venture into the woods until after the hard frost comes. And remember that the little baby ones have venom, too.

Atlanta Journal/Constitution: Grandson's Heroics Can't Overcome Rattler's Venom

Three generations of Ruperts entered the dense woods in rural Oglethorpe County last Saturday morning, rifles in hand.

Patriarch Dick Rupert, 68, loved these hunting trips with his son Russell and grandson Chad, though they'd spend much of the day apart, perched in their tree stands amid the familiar solitude.

Rupert, who lived in Winder with his wife of 50 years, escorted grandson Chad to the boy's tree stand around 7:30 a.m. With the 12-year-old safely situated, Rupert headed for his own quiet place in the woods. A sharp, shooting pain in his calf stopped him cold.

"I think I just got bit by a snake," he told his grandson. Chad heard the rattle.

Here's another story I missed back in September that has some macabre elements, especially for Snape fans! Eek!

Dothan, Alabama, Man Bitten on Neck by Rattlesnake

“Most people can survive a snake bite, but this was in the neck that’s why it was so deadly,“ Wright said.

My Garden Part One ~ June 2009

Green Acres

I promised [info]aredwitchweeks ago that I would post pictures of my garden. So here they are.  I'll update this with Part 2 as the veggies start to grow. I already have baby tomatoes and  peppers.

The posts in the middle are to hold up the tomato plants as they grow.
My husband angles them outward and then the weight of the tomatoes pulls them straight as they get heavy.
We learned to do this the hard way after having our tomato trellis nearly collapse a few summer ago.

The sugar peas on the right have turned yellow now, so I'm planting something else there.
They can't survive the ninety-degree weather.
and they've been growing since back in January.

My friends and I have had so much fun watching this Owl Cam at the State University of California at Bakersfield.  This must be on the roof of one of the buildings.

It's a mother Great-Horned Owl raising three fuzzy babies. It constantly refreshes and you'll be amazed at how alert this owl is all day. The babies mostly sleep but they are getting bigger all the time. If the screen looks reddish-black, that's just because it's still night in California.
