Independence Day

  • Jul. 5th, 2008 at 12:55 AM
I got back from the fireworks not too long ago. It was a very nice display and the weather was perfect. There weren't even any mosquitoes, which is unheard of for the 4th of July around here!

The day began with me driving up to my uncle's lake house for a barbecue. My parents, my cousin and her new boyfriend, and a few of my uncle's friends were also there. I was the last to arrive, which is pretty typical. My uncle's dog was most excited to see me because no one else who had arrived wanted to play with her, but she was to be disappointed by me, as well. Play with a soggy ball soaked in dog spit? I don't think so... So, the dog had to entertain herself, which she did to our amusement. She took a squeaky toy and laid down with it. She then proceeded to bite down on it every few seconds to make it squeak for a good 3-4 minutes. It was very funny! She also ate a bone. I didn't realize dogs actually ate bones - I thought they just chewed on them to...I don't know...exercise their teeth or something. Then, later, she was given a dog biscuit and buried that. The dog biscuit was bone-shaped, but I'm not sure the dog would pay any attention to that. I've heard of dogs burying bones, but not dog biscuits! *lol*

After dinner, my cousin, her boyfriend, and I walked down the road to the lake and took a walk on the beach. The lake was pretty warm and the weather was great. We walked down to the lake house our grandparents used to own and inspected it, then continued up the beach to the point we always used to walk when we were kids. We'd taken our flip-flops off and left them on a platform with benches leading down to the beach. When we got back, there was this completely gorgeous guy sitting right where we'd left our flip-flops under the bench. He was reading a book and listening to an iPod. So, we had to disturb him to get our flip-flops and got into a short conversation about how far we'd walked and landmarks along the beach. I really wanted to talk to him longer, but having nothing to say and no reason to continue being there, we left. And so, life continues to pass me by...

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

  • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Fridays are quiet days at work and we decided to cheer ourselves up and also celebrate 4th July by raiding the local supermarket midday for muffins and doughnuts.

This may not be the most appropriate thing to celebrate America's independence but we enjoyed it very much!

Happy Fourth of July!

The Internet seemed to have survived my almost complete absence lately, as I hurried to clean the apartment and entertained my sister and her two kids. It was great to see them again! We had a great time. We saw WALL-E, which was a terrific movie. It amused me that all the local stuff I take for granted was of actual tourist interest to my out-of-town niece and nephew. My nephew photographed every building having to do with the Packers including Brett Favre's Steak House, and the street signs of every street named after a Packer player, and the little monolithic tributes to the great players which the Oneida Nation has erected on Brett Favre Way.

I haven't been fishing for years, but the kids wanted to go fishing, so I got my gear together and bought a license. I caught two three-inch bass, and my niece caught a two-ince catfish. My nephew apparently had better luck the next day when I was back at work, catching two buffalo and another fish I can't recall.

Now they are back in Milwaukee, and since I have the 4th off, I decided to get some mileage out of that fishing license. The first fish I caught was something I had never seen before, a silver fish that looked something like a perch or sunfish. I found a picture of it later in th Fishing Regulations book--it was a Freshwater Drum, aka Sheepshead. For a perch or sunfish it had seemed to be a respectable size, so I kept it. After I knew what it was, I read that the record size for one in my state is 35 pounds, so my little bluegill-sized one is actually kind of puny. I also caught and released a large sucker and two tiny, bait-stealing perch.

And now the fish is on ice, waiting to be cleaned. I need a nap, first.

Prequel Challenge - The Bike

This is a short piece I wrote for the HPN 800 Prequel Writing Challenge.  It was written before the release of the prequel by J K Rowling and was named the entry most like J K Rowling's prequel.  I am merely posting it here again so that things are all archived together.

Hens and chicks have flowers too.

  • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 9:44 AM
When I walk around my yard, I try to keep a sharp eye out for signs of bugs or diseases. Like most problems, best to catch them early. It is not always bad news. Yesterday I spotted this strange flower. I didn't know hens and chicks bloom like that. I just bought them for the corner next to the sidewalk because it is always hot and dry there. Hens and chicks are usually grown in rock gardens. They are a succulent.
So now I am curious. It would appear this one, although it had no label when I bought it, is a sempervivum arachnoideum. It means in latin - always living and spider like. The other common variety of hens and chicks is sempervivium tectorum. The tectorum is for 'of the roof' because these 'houseleeks' were sometimes grown on roofs in the thatch because (according to About.com) they are supposed to provide protection against lightning induced fires by Zeus or Thor.
Time to show you my flower:

Pretty stunning, isn't it? Apparently now that the mother plant has bloomed, it will die but its babies will live on. It takes 2 to 3 years for a flower to appear. That would be how long I have had the plant. It is surrounded by the Dusty Miller that should not be living, a stonecrop and purple coneflower.
