J. K. Rowling to Pen New Novel

JKR-LipCurl
From Guardian UK:
Rowling said of today's announcement: Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series … The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.
Will an "adult" novel be any good? Who knows! But it's fun to read all the online comments:

Nice analysis from Percontation Points on tumblr
...the response seems to be falling into a few major categories:
* Type I) People who are practically foaming at the mouth/in the brain with excitment.
* Type II) People who are expecting to like it just fine, but are already disappointed that it’s not more Harry Potter.
* Type III) This is exactly what I wanted from JK. This has more potential than any Harry Potter sequel, prequel, or in-between-quel could ever have. All is well in the literary world.
From CNN Marquee Blog we have several amusing comments which take the meaning of "adult" novel literally:
Harry Potter and the Half-Clothed Chick ~ Unknown
[Insert magic wand joke here.] ~ Tony
Harry Potter and the Knobbly Rod ~ cpc65

It's a tough act to follow - she's very brave to even attempt it.

True, and anyone might feel sorry for her in that regard. But, as so many of us know ourselves, if she's a writer, she must write, regardless of critics, market or whatever. Believe me, I will be critical! :) But good for her for keeping on writing, even if I don't care for her stuff any more.

I'm a Type III.

Although my biggest response is that the grown-ups had better have more sexual options than "celibacy," "celibacy," and "celibacy" in this one.

And I devoutly hope that the lack of series suspense means JKR saw fit to find a beta. She made such strides in her writing ability by DH, unbetaed though it was. It'll be glorious to see her further improvements.

Re: the Tumblr quote, I am not grasping how III is different from I...

Hmm, for me it's more about being happy for her than about getting more of her writing for me.

I didn't think about how similar those are. Hmmm. Maybe number I is a knee-jerk reaction just because JKR is the Queen, while III is more about curiosity for the future?

drinkingcocoa: I think JKR could handle sex, but my worst fear is the way she deals with romance. I hope it's based on something besides sex and popularity. I'd like to see some depth.

I guess I am a I, then. I've been wanting her to write something new and non-HP since DH came out, since I expect it will be excellent.

Can't wait to see this one.

Me too! I'm excited about whatever she writes. :)

I actually feel sorry for JKR, in a way. She has fans whose expectations can never be met, and she has fellow writers/critics who have the long blades out for her, just out of professional jealousy and more than a little snobbery. It'll be interesting to see what she turns her hand to, and how it's received.

Perhaps a nom de plum would have been preferable?

LOL, but it would be fascinating to see how the book would be received by a nom de plum and then, after the big reveal.

OK BIG NEWS!!!
euh, but haven't we something already before?

"Next book will be for adults"
"JKR back to the cafe it all started"

besides a cute and flimpsy Beetle the Bard we have seen nothing and I fear Jo had filled quite a few wastebaskets over the last years, but no bookshelves.

I am a type 0, till I see something more solid than a newsflash.

I wonder if she really is writing at the cafe? Have you actually seen that reported somewhere? That seems really cheesy to me, LOL.

What about option 4? Those of us who were so disappointed in the illogic, incoherence and amorality of DH that we don't care to read anything else by Rowling?

Honestly, I am happy for those of you who loved the book, but I (almost) totally see where exhpfan is coming from. His only mistake is in blaming the flaws of DH, and therefore the series as a whole, on its being a childrens' book.

Yeah, Option #4. I'll not be lining up at the bookstore for this one, and will wait for the reviews before I buy.
